“PERLIS TOWARDS THE FIRST CLASS MENTALITY BY THE YEAR 2013”new

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Ta’ala Wabarakatuh and a very good morning to you.

Ladies And Gentlemen,

First of all, I would like to express my gratitude and thanks for the warm reception and hospitality extended by the Principal, teachers, staff and students of Sekolah Menengah Sains Tuanku Syed Putra .
I would also like to thank the Perlis Director of Education and his colleagues as well as all the Head of Government Agencies and their officers who are involved directly or indirectly in this programme, and everyone at this school for their efforts in preparing for the Titian Kasih Programme initiated by the JPN and Yayasan Tuanku Syed Putra Perlis held in conjunction with the Raja of Perlis sixty fifth birthday today.

I would also like to wish “Selamat Datang” or Welcome and “Wilkommen to Perlis!” to all the international students from the Inter-Community School of Zurich,  in short ICSZ. I hope that during your one day visit to this school, all of you coming from an advance and developed country will find pleasure in sharing your knowledge and at the same time getting some insights on the daily life of the students in one of the fully residential schools in Malaysia. I hope that all of you will bring back home your sweet experiences and memories and share them with your relatives and friends and hopefully the friendship that will be fostered today will continue to flourish, done virtually or otherwise long after today’s event is over.

Ladies and gentlemen,
The theme for today’s event is “PERLIS TOWARDS FIRST CLASS MENTALITY BY THE YEAR 2013” .

What actually is meant by having “First Class Mentality”?.
A society with “First Class Mindset or Mentality” is one that we define as being knowledgeable, competitive, has a high performance culture, integrity strong moral values and free from ‘Drugs’. It is also a society of learned people who practice mutual respect on races and appreciate culture, arts and heritage, as well as the history of their nation, race and religion. This society is known by its strong sense of caring, self-esteem work hard towards the eradication of poverty and is not easily swayed by the waves of globalisation. This society is steadfast in its faith in God and loyalty to the King and country.

By having citizens who have first class mentality, working towards being a fully developed country we would be able to optimise the use of the first-class infrastructure present in many parts of Malaysia and Perlis in particular.

To be a truly developed nation, we must instill and develop Malaysians of good character and disciplined, hard-working and well rounded. Therefore, we must develop “First World” habits that stress on integrity, politeness and a deep sense of concern for cleanliness, maintenance as well as a natural dislike for inefficiency, wastage and shoddy work.

Schools , especially, have to start nurturing in their students, a positive set of values, mentality and cultures, as well as, rid ourselves of bad habits and discarding the ‘tidak apa’ attitude that may stand in the way of  progress.

What are considered as bad habits ?

I am sure many of us have come across acts of vandalism or seen facilities which are in bad shapes for a long time, or have had to deal with rude and inefficient staff in banks, supermarkets and some government departments. You might even see people driving high-end vehicles but doing indecent acts on the road like smoking in the car and throwing the cigarette stub out of the window not to mention the ‘Rempits’.

I am also concern over our the lackadaisical attitude towards safety, including riding motorcycles without wearing crash helmets or travelling in cars without wearing seat belts front and back. These kind of people have first-class facilities but  third-class mentality.

It is quite useless to have beautiful physical infrastructure and the latest information technology systems if you have a rude person managing the counter not knowing the basic courtesy standards. We still hear of complaints that some of the services provided do not commensurate with the impressive physical structures.

In order to become a truly developed nation, we have to look at the ills and challenges confronting the country. Another challenge that we need to look into is how to evolve a value system that abhors graft or Rasuah. This is the hardest part – to change the mindset of the people behind the nation’s development.

Changing the mindset takes a long time to nurture and the results of what’s being done today may only show in 10, 20 or even 30 years. It is time for us, the stakeholders to work in tandem towards the betterment, so that we will be able to appreciate what has been made available to us.

We including everyone here at Sekolah Menengah Sains Tuanku Syed Putra must make sure that our youth are educated well. We may not be able to  teach the adults but we should emphasis on the next generation moral education, which must be taught in schools, and there , it is the teachers’ able capability to make sure that our young people’s mentality become first-class.

A great school like yours today must stress on education and a culture for social development which promotes values like efficiency, politeness and timeliness. Otherwise, our investment may fall apart. This has been the experience in some other countries. Let us all hope for the best and let us all wake up and do something about it.

It would also be necessary and useful to have definitive targets, say in five years, that is in 2013, to see that public properties like all school and mosque toilets are clean, all facilities in public parks are in good working order, the streets clear of rubbish, the counter services at all government departments are of a certain quality and that all public amenities are well maintained. We also want to see the public transport used in a civilized manner, without seeing people pushing and squeezing their way in to get good seats regardless of the queue.

This is an important point because the inculcation of good values will enhance the economic development of the state, in terms of creating value and making Perlis a more attractive place to visit and do business. This will result in higher tourist Ringgits, more investment opportunities and also more employment opportunities for our rakyat.

Ladies and gentlemen,

We need full commitment and concerted efforts from all parties to ensure the success of our nation and our race. If we want to realize our aspiration every citizen has to show commitment and willingness to work hard and change.

Thank you once again for all the hard work and cooperation given to make this programme a success. It is our wish to have a nation that is prosperous, developed, progressive and dynamic; a nation that is capable of providing a better quality of life to its people. May we build a golden civilization that earns the respect of the world.

May Allah, the  Almighty bless our sincerity and labours.

Ya Allah, You are the One Exalted in Power, the One Full of Knowledge – between the good and evil; between the obvious and the unseen. Protect us from calamity and danger – from disturbances and strife; grant us our prayers; guide us to righteousness and to the path that You bless, provide us with people who are, trustworthy, noble and honest; responsible in building a developed nation – building a united people – we forever seek Your blessings.

With that, I would like to end my speech and let us pray that today’s programme will be carried out successfully and achieve its objectives. Thank You and Danke Schoen.

Sekian,

Wabillahi taufik walhidayah wassalamualaikum warahmatullahi’taala wabarakatuh.
